Re: Cast iron front calipers?

Post by SimonB »

I guess I want calipers that are already rebuilt to make the process quicker and simpler. I have got a pretty good quote from Centerline in the US. I just want to make sure I order the right stuff the first time because the shipping is high from the US so I just want to order once!

At least I have realised that the best way to check if I have alloy front calipers is with a magnet! duh! I am afraid to admit I am a Physics teacher

The other questions are just about which other Alfa brakes are the same in case anything comes up on eBay.

1) front brakes are same as 75/Milano 2.0 TS, 2.5 and 3.0 as well as Mitsu Lancer Evo rear brakes!

2) rear brakes are not same as 75/milano but may be like GTV 2.0.

Forgive me for being careful, I have just been quoted 550€ for a tow to one of the nearer Alfa specialists!

I have also had my daily car stolen and need to buy a replacement so this is going to be an expensive month!

Thanks Fedezyl but I don't have anywhere to work or the tools and confidence to do this. In the future, I aim to do more on the Alfa myself as its the only way to make sure stuff is done properly, but I am a real novice now and don't want to start on safety related things like this.

I said PADS will fit from REAR Lan Evo brakes. The CALIPERS are NOT the same. :)

ALL REAR calipers on Alfetta based cars EXCEPT the SZ/RZ (ES30) are the same.

ok?

I am in Australia and have had parts sent(rear calipers and front and rear pads) from Andy at Performatek, in the USA. He is great to deal with AND THE FREIGHT WAS CHEAP.I would try him for all your braking needs.

Thanks Kanga! when I asked all the companies in Europe and US that I could think of to quote me on the same stuff, Centerline gave the best overall quote including postage, even when I figured in VAT and customs duties. I have one more stupid question, do all Euro GTV6s have the same alloy Brembo front calipers, Centerline asked me to go check but my car is in a lock up on the other side of town. It still has whatever is standard as I have the receipt for the last set (1998!), they need to know to give me the right rebuild kit. I bought the front pads off eBay, they said Alfa 75 2.0, 2.5 3.0 on them so it must be the TS i guess.

Cheers

Simon

I have seen different types of snap rings on the pins holding the pads, maybe that's what they're after?

Has anyone seen a different make of front caliper than Brembo as standard on this type of GTV6?

SimonB,

I have front calipers from a 75 V6 in good condition (California car, so no rust). I can mail it out to you tomorrow if you want (will email you photos first) if we agree on it (and the price, don't worry since mine are used it will be hell of a lot cheaper than anything rebuilt or new).

I can also order a rebuild kit for you and package it all with the caliper. What you can do then is use my calipers and then rebuild your old calipers as backup.

email me if interested. I don't like throwing away these 116 stuff, never know when it will come handy.

Hi,
I'd like to ask one question. I recently bought a 1973 Alfa Romeo Alfetta in good conditions. I have noticed that the right front caliper tends to stick, so a rebiuld will be done soon. The front calipers, like all 4 bolts wheels Alfas, are cast iron. I have an extra pair of brembo front caliper. My question is: would it be possible to fit these calipers on my Alfetta, simply by removing the centre spacer between the caliper halves? All the bolts holes position of the Brembo caliper, match the Ate ones?
Thank you
Regards

Instead of modifying the Brembo caliper, why not install some vented rotors?
The caliper fit should be the same.

Hi,
The car is in pretty original conditions and has spent most of its life between Parma and Reggio Emilia (where famous Parmigiano Reggiano is produced) in a closed garage, being used just on sunny weekends. The owner was a 1921 man, who decided to sell the car because he has now some physical problems. The car is so original, that for instance it still has glued windshield and rear window (the first series alfetta, built between summer 1972 and spring 1975 had glued front and rear windows, but 90% of them were converted to windows using gaskets, like Giulias, due to rust issues).
I want to keep the car as much original as possible, so no oversized tyres or 5 bolts rims or anything else. I have to rebuild the front and rear brakes, but I'd like to keep the car at the mechanic garage for the lowest possible amount of time. So my car would keep running while the garagist rebuilds the calipers (when he's ready, he gives me a call and in one afternoon the calipers and the flexible hoses are replaced). I do have an extra set of rear calipers from a 75 twin spark (the same for all transaxle alfas) but do not have an extra set of Ate front calipers. I do have 2 more Brembos instead (from a 75 twin spark). If they can be put WITHOUT big modifications in lieu of the ATEs (just by removing the centre spacer), I will use them (they are also lighter and should slightly improve the comfort). If this is not the case, I'll buy at the scrapyard 2 front ATE calipers. Four bolts wheels Alfa 75 can still be found in Italy at the junkyard and I don't think they would ask more than 60 euros for a pair of calipers...
For the moment, the only other modification I am thinking of, is the installation on an LSD differential in place of the fragile 2 satellite diff the car is equipped with, but again, the car has to remain original, only minor invisible (from outside) improvements shall be done

Ah so that puts a whole different perspective on things.Do not install ANYTHING that is not original on this car and that includes the Brembos. There are many improvements to the transaxle cars over the years but I trust you would not consider making these upgrades as that would ruin the authenticity of this very special car.

Don't be tempted to install a LSD into the box as it will not make any real difference to your driving experience unless you are thinking of doing competition in this car and that would be ridiculous.

No, keep it simple.Keep it true. Just fix whatever is there in the same way that is there originally whether there are better version of the part on not. Keep it original and you will realise maximum value for this car in the future.

Hi,
thank you for your post, I think this is the best suggestion I could get. I'll go for an extra set of ATE cast iron calipers and keep the brembos as spare parts for my 75 twin spark

Good decision. But to answer your question; it would work. The boltspacing and sze of the caliper is identical, it's only wider. if you take the 4 bolts out and remove the spacers you can use them on your solid discs. This is done quite often on 105 series cars (Giulias, Bertones).

Hi,
Thank you for your clarifications. I'll follow your suggestions and keep the Brembos as spare calipers for my 2 75 twin spark

and buy 2 cast iron Ate calipers for my Alfetta, so that when their rebuild is finished I can swap the rebuilt with the old sticking ones.
Thank you again and regards
