I ran into the same problem with all AR engines I've built. There's very little you can do to remove weight from the pistons. You can remove what looks like a lot of metal and then weigh again and see only a 1gr difference! The pin is much more suitable, by making the inside tapered on both sides, it works every time. Plus, you can play around with the rings and find another 2-3gm difference! I do this on an ''OHAUS'' precision beam balance I have (1,6kg capacity) which has a resolution down to 0,1gr!! Its excellent for this type of work.
The official AR shop manual for the Giulia 1600 engine, calls for a 2gr difference between rods and 5gr between rod and piston assemblies, but even this is bull, as usual. I don't have my 3liter manual here to check on the V6 numbers, but I remember them being way off too (as expected!!).

both my fleewheels were lightend and my car became undrivable in traffic.especialy when manouvering !!the engine died all the time and i had to stay on the gaspedal all the time,a bit stupid for a 3,0 engine isn't it! so the lightend rear stayed and the front disapeared! the car was quicker ,but what the heck.i didn't notice any vibrations.because the cast iron it would explode.
i was fed up with this project so now greg's supercharger will come,i don't need lightend flywheels anymore

I plan to rebuild the 166 3.0 engine before I put it in the 156 2.5. So I read this forum very carefully and have Jim's book on tuning the Twin-Cam engine under my pillow. The V6 24v has twin cams per bank, so Jim, when will your new book on "How to blueprint your Alfa V6 engine" appear? I think it is time to put all the fragmentated information on the V6 engine in a printed book. (Jim?)

I'm working on it, every time I get the urge to be creative (which I ain't very often!). I thought I would be done by May/June...but I have to decide on the year,hahah! Its going slower than I anticipated. Will let you all know though. Thanks for the interest!
