Ben, have not forgortten to find the hardness brinell c. Must just do some conversions to get exact figure if its above or below 60. Been chatting to a lot of ''experts '' , and the most critical element is, as Mats mentioned is the oil. If the oil is breaking down and molecules are shearing , this intern causes minor ''explosions'' on the gear resulting in pitting and then failure. This is all induced from the vibration in the l gear from accelaration to decelleration. Got to look at a gear in the same light as a journal as it basicaly is producing the same function-. I think we just get sh*t oil here as the are ten times more gearbox failures here than i have seen anywhere else. maybe our drivers are really bad :)
Must say the imported redline oil is working great at the moment.

When i'm overhauling my transaxle i'll do some test. Check the hardness off the pinion gear and some other , check it for kerbs. Also gonna discus it with our engenier or it can be strengthen. Maybe make some new parts . Whe can make everything over here. Also whe can do good research. So there maybe al salution. maybe maybe maybe.... :?

I have seen that exact pinion failure twice, both times on stockish 2.5 engines. That leads me to agree that it may have been a quality control issue.

Yeah, that was mine way back when at 29K miles, and an 83 at that, dumped the clutch and, bang - stripped pinion...

350 RWhp... sheesh  and torque? GV

Hardening issues maybe? Too deep and you have problems like this.

Mats , think i mentioned this before but I did have the pionion analysed and they found oxidation in the root of the pinion tooth caused from ingerss off air during heat treatment process . Therefore FACTORY DEFECT.

Sry, thought Greg were talking about the pinion falling off.
