JJ thanks for the clarification- so it's easier to go to big bore on the 24v, and the rods and head studs are better- so really, turbo wise, its a good starting point to get hold of one, say as opposed to a 12v 3.0 with higher lift cams, billet rods, big valves, and 7.6:1 pistons already in it?? That engine should be pretty sorted for an 8k redline.

Barry, Andrew, JJ, is there any issue with the big bores having not as much meat around the liners when you boost them?

So the extra weight of a gearbox up front isnt too much of an issue? I can imagine it would be fairly different to drive, and probably not as balanced, but obviously you can make it handle... you wouldnt have a track car one otherwise... on the other hand, if it would cost the same to get a straight cut rear gbox made up, (which it probably nearly would out here) would you still fit a getrag up front?

Andrew, how is a turbo a waste on the track, do you think?

Im gathering the 6 speed youre talking about is the E36 3.2 six speed? Im told the 3.0 E36 M3 boxes arent too crash hot, and neither are the engines, for that matter.
Fixing it bit by bit....

Julian - If you can lay your hands on that 12v engine DO IT! you are 90 percent there already. Don't waste time looking for a 24v to build up. Remember one thing.... you will easily get more power than you ever need, or that the car car can handle from a 12v twin-turbo. You're talking 400hp plus at 1.1 bar boost. Remember, Glenwood was racing and winning with 12v tt's many years befor the 24v motors were around! They work, and it's proven.

No problems with the liners Julian, plenty thick enough. The V6 only needs pretty low boost to make big power. Coopers style sealing rings are a good idea with the big bore motors, but standard spesso gaskets are okay on the standard bore road car - if it's a race car, then i'd go for coopers style sealing rings even on the 3.0.

Yes - the torque you get from the turbo motors is simply way too much for the standard, or even competition propshafts/gbox mounts. You can get away with it on the street, but you are asking for big trouble on a track car.

Plus you get rid of the crappy gearlinkage (that we all convince ourselves is pretty good......yeah right) and get a really really good one from the BMW box! The car FEELS quicker with this alone....!

Way to much torque for chassis. You need 11" or 12" slicks at least, which are too big in my opinion. Heat management issues, massive fuel tank, too heavy, high corner speeds are difficult to modulate. In short, a 300 hp naturally aspirated GTV6 will walk all over 500+ twin turbo GTV6 if used as track/race only cars.

Yeah Jules, E36 3.2 M3 6 speed box will do great!
