AFM issues

Post by wsudding »

Hi guys,

I am sure you must have discussed this before but humor me please. I have an '82 GTV 2.5. The AFM that came with the car has been giving me lots of trouble. The board has been worn out alot and i went about finding a new AFM.

I eventually found one that comes off a running GTV6 that is being rebuilt. Upon installing it the engine starts and dies. I checked the connections, airleaks etc. but found nothing wrong.

How can it be that it doesnt work if it is the same and in better condition than my old AFM?

Maybe the original AFM was just fine?
The problem might be something else.

I think it must be something else. It might be a fuel pressure problem. What are the possible locations of fuel pressure loss?

Fuel pump, fuel leak?

I had a similar problem. The engine fires up for about 1 second then immediately dies. Turned out to be that the computer was not completely snapped into its wiring harness connector.

I dont think it is that. The car was fine until a few weeks ago. I will have a look though. It fires up and revs then just cuts out. Before i changed the AFM it was not picking up revs as it should.

Thanks for the reply.

I have found the problem.
The fuel pump is the culprit and is now being replaced. That should sort out my problem of high revs cutout.

Thanks

This is very strange. After replacing the fuel pump, fuel filter and setting the CO on the car it was running brilliantly.

Still didn't fix the high revs cutout but was purring like a bengal tiger. Up until 2 days ago. Now it is once again not idling nicely, is eating fuel and is struggling in the lower rev range.

I want to have my AFM recalibrated as it seems to be the problem every time. Set it and for a week it's fine, then it does what it wants.

Barry, any chance you can calibrate it or know of someone in the Joburg area?

Have all of the vacuum leaks been addressed?

Just changing out the majority of hoses on this thing cured my start issues, idle and stumble issues....

Greg's kit is a sure thing!

After that, get rid of the AFM. I have spent a great deal of time with that thing to try and make it work right and the time ended up costing me two weeks total out of my life, away from work and away from life and driving and Alfa....

What is 2 weeks of your time worth? - was my final question, so I went stand-alone and I am not looking back...
...to Alfa, or not to Alfa? That is the question...

William,Yes.Can help in re calibrating it.

I think part of your problem is that the cold start injector might be messing around .Disconnect the blue plug to the injector and see what this does.

There is also a connection to the fuel pump relay that makes the cold start injector switch on at peculiar times. Its one of the thin male connectors on the body wiring side.I think its a purple wire??

Yor previous problem was most likely the cold start injector giving fuel and not the main injectors. As you let go of the ign. key ,you cut the power to the cold start inj.as well and hence the engine died.An old problem ,all related to the fuel pump relay....

Send me a mail....

John,pm`d you as well......
