in-tank fuel filter replacement

The other day, driving in reverse , my car stalled and could´'t get it started again. The in-tank plastic filter was torn and the fuel pump got blocked. I have bought a new bosch pump but cannot get hold of a replacement filter. If I can´t buy one I will fit one under the car before the pump.
Does anybody know where i can get a new in-tank filter?
If I fit an exterior one, where does it go, there is not much room. The pump has a12mm inlet but the filter I located has only 10mm intake and outtake. Will it work? Is there sufficient flow? I know some of you have the exterior filter on your cars and I need to know how it works.
