Distributor problem

Hi All,

What is causing my dissy cap to be "eaten" by the spark?

Seems like the distributor is too retard. In this photo, the rotor spins from right to left (since we are looking with the dissy cap flipped).

It seems that the spark is fired too early from the rotor and arcs to each point on the dissy cap. This arcing is melting the rotor cap. Car ran like sh*t last night. I panicked and check compression, (175-180 psi all around), cam timing, valve clearance, smelled plug for fuel in case some injectors aren't firing, etc.

I think maybe I need to advance the dissy a bit.

Any thoughts?

Car is running Autronic ECU and max advance is 30 degrees BTDC.

Can it be done without altering the ignition advance?
Mabe file down the little locating tab and just turn the cap.

Mats,

That would be the same as turning the whole distributor....You, of all people, should have known.

If the ecu will allow for ignition advance adjustment independant of the dizzy set the ecu advance to zero, set the timing close to the desired setting with the dizzy, and tweek it with the ecu settings....my$.02

hth,

What? No, it's not the same. The pickup is in the dizzy housing, if you file down the locating tab on the cap and then turn just the cap you won't alter the ignition timing. :P

Have you checked to see if the distributor cap has not moved out of the lugs on the distributor and is in the wrong position.
