smoking aircon?

I swear sometimes i feel all im doing is posting problems not fixing them 
the other day i went for a drive, a few minutes into the drive the aircon stopped, on first setting, second and third. this was quite strange, i also noticed that the engine when the aircon was off revved higher and when i turned it on again the idle dropped (still no air coming out though!), lastly at one stage i forgot id left the aircon fan switch on 1 and i noticed a small stream of smoke coming out of the vents just above the radio. what could have happened? i checked and theres no blown fuses, i did notice that near that funny gas tank on the front right tyrewall there is what appears to be three wires connected to a basic resistor. all of these showed damage from heat, the leads werent connecting properly, replaced them but still nothing
