GTV 6: potential fire hazard

Don't want to sound too alarmist BUT.......

I am in the process of rebuilding the gearlinkage (isostatic) and the heat/dust shield above the cat needs to be removed.

Amazingly the positive feed from the battery passes across the car at this point.

Mine is badly melted in two places (I'll get photos, latter today maybe).

The cable is held by two clips, they are both broken that may be due to heat/age. This may have allowed the cable to rest against the heat shield.

It is possible that this car had an overheating cat at some time but I can't believe I have the only vehicle affected.

I strongly suggest checking yours and passing this post to others.

Maybe I am an alarmist?

I had the same problem, although multiple wear and melt points were discovered. I replaced with marine grade silicon coated copper strand battery cable. I forget the gauge, but it had shorter diameter than original which allowed a little more room through the support holes. It has a very tough covering but is flexable enough to go around bends. Cost about 3$/foot. Also added quick disconnect end to battery.
Everything wears so a cable check is now added to my routine inspections.

Silicon would work. Good idea.

Did you get it from a marine store or special order?

Thanks for the idea.
