Fuel return line size? and fuel supply to pump size?? leaks

Post by Sunracer »

Hi all, this is my first post to this forum. I recently bought a project GTV6. It is the '84 that was for sale in the classifieds her by the guy that was moving. I made the ridicoulous offer he was open to and got the car. I have been going through a lot of the differed maintenence items on it (front wheel bearings, new caster rod bushings, rear brakes on order, a little of Greg gordons tuniing suggestions, replacing damaged Bosch connectors etc. ) Tonight after I finished the Bosch connectors to the TTC andCTS I got under the car to add a missin snap ring to the clutch slave cylinder. When I replaced it earlier I found one of them in pieces. Csaba at Vick Autopsport kindly mailed me a use replacement. Anyway, I noticed part of the FI return line was cracked. Like a genius I poked at it with my finger and it promptly began to leak on the floor of my garage. Yikes. I clmped it shut with vise grips and the leak seemed to stop. I have rolled the car out into my driveway for the night.

Tommorrow I want to pick up some FI return line and maybe a new line to feed the pump. Can anyone tell me what the correct sizes are??? I can get under there and cut a piece off and plug it since my driveway is conviniently partly flooded by a neighbors leaking pipe and I don't want to spill anymore gas in the garage with with a gas powered waqter heater in there. TIA Pierre

Pierre are you referring to the rubber fuel line or the hard plastic line that runs from the engine compartment through the passenger compartment and back ? If it's the former I have included a link to the old GTV6 forum where this was discussed.Do a search for "fuel line"You'll likely end up needing 7.5mm high pressure fuel injection type hose.
A note of caution. If you have found a rubber line which has degraded due to age, replace every single inch of fuel hose on your car. This includes the short hoses that run from the fuel injector rail down to each individual injector.Failure to do so will likely result in one of two failures either a FIRE or loss of fuel pump due to injestion of decomposing rubber. You'll find that the fuel pump sends its output through a hose which bends 180 deg.to go back to the fuel filter which is mounted to the rear of the pump (It's a weird arrangement). This bend can not be made with standard fuel line as it will crush and block the line. You can either find a pre-bent length or make up your own by using 2 x rigid 90 deg.plumbing fittings of an appropriate size. This is what I did.Make sure all your clamps are in perfect shape and tightened to the max. You will soon come to know and love  the underside of your Alfa.

Murray,

Do you have pics of the FP & filter arrangement with the hard pipes? I'd love to see how you did it.

Dave I did my best to take a pic.Basically I replaced the 180 deg.turned hose using 2 -90 deg.1/2" copper plumbing fittings. It has worked out just fine. It's important to size the assembly such that it still tucks up into the space between the dedion crossmember and the car's chassis otherwise it will be hanging down.I also added an in-line fuel filter between my FI pump and the tank to ensure that the pump doesn't get jammed with any garbage floating around the system.I had that experience and don't care to repeat it

Thanks Murray, great pics. So you're not concerned about corrosion in the copper pipes? I suppose as long as the car is used enough that would be a moot point anyway.

If I understand you correctly, you are using fuel filters upstream and downstream of the pump?

Dave no I'm not concerned about corrosion of the copper,it's a spring-fall only car and the copper seems to be holding up just fine.Yes I've got filters up and downstream -nothing is going to get through and jam my $ 300 fuel pump again !
