Motronic in GTV6-83

Post by Seb »

Hey Guys!

I have a similar thread in the old forum, but I´ll give it a try here too.

I´ve just put a 3.0QV from a 164 in my GTV6-83. I moved the Motronic along from the 164 to get as much out of the engine as possible.

Now I need some help with connecting/hooking up the Motronic. Has anyone done this? I would just love it if soneone had some documentation from doing this. Some of it is prutty obvious, but thera are some question marks!

help :? / Seb

seb,
My conversion isnt half as far along as yours, but im kind of sticking with Jetronic. There are a few ways to do this conversion:

Option 1:$$$ The ideal L-Jet setup on a 3.0 would be to keep all the stock 2.5 injection stuff and use bigger injectors and a BMW AFM. Then set mixture with the AFM adjustment by reading the O2 voltage.

Option 2: You can use all the stock 2.5 stuff and adjust the AFM spring tension to get the correct mixture without doing anything else. I have not done it on a 3.0 but I suspect it will work and it will definatly work at lower and mid range RPM so you can at least get the car going this way.

Option 3: Have your 2.5 ECU changed into a 3.0 ECU. Alfa Heaven does this and there are probably others that do it too.

Option 4: Use a small resistor to change either the coolant or air temp values the ECU reads. You can even use a variable resistor to make adjustments from inside the car.

Option 5: Get a 3.0 ECU and install it, you may need to change the entire L-Jetronic wiring harness. This is not the way I would go. Too much trouble and expense for no benifit.

Option 6: (The way im going) Purchase a BMW AFM, ECU, and injectors. Use the AFM spring and 02 sensor reading to get the mixture correct. Personally MS and Motronic conversion scare me, wayyyy oovver this guys head . I just purchased a 164 and the motronic is a big step above L-Jet. This way i get to keep my simple L-Jet, and only spend $150USD for the ECU, AFM, and injectors.

The thing is, I have all the stuff that belongs to the 3.0QV engine. So I´m moving the Motronic ECU, AFM, everything from the 164QV engine.

So the hook up with the engine isn´t the problem, but how to make it work with the car´s existing electrical system. There´s a lot of wires that aren´t needed and some that are.

That why I wonder if not anyone has done this already, who could give me some pinters on what to hook up where.

Jacob,

I tackled the 3.0L conversion and the MS install at the same time. I've never soldered a circuit board in my life (50+ years) before MS but found it all straight forward, The tunability via laptop and the great help from the likes of Peter Webb convinced me I made the right decision. But each to their own.

I actually purchased a BMW AFM and was going down that track, but was not convinced mixtures would be correct across the whole rev range, particularly with mods to the air intake and runners and how could I fix it if it was running too lean.
I got a quote for the Motronic conversion, 10 times what MS cost me, so I figured, "nothing ventured nothing gained".

What I have got is a great running 3.0L.

yeah, I did. As I've told you before. But my wiring loom is all neatly taped in :( To my recollection it's just 12V from the cars loo and the connection to the fuel pump. Do some connecting on the coil and you're done!

I tried doing the upgrade to Motronic but ran into wiring problems. Specifically an area junction called the Relay Set. I was not able to come up with the right information on what was there in order to make the conversion. I finally got impatient and just went to the L-jet.

hellu!

I think I´m getting closer to a solution to my problems (with the Motronic) :)

The wires I´ve been worried about are three on the Motronic loom.
One pink, one pink/white and one green/black.

The pink/white and the pink wire both comes from the fuel relay om the Motronic loom. I think the pink/white is going of to the fuel pump and the pink is supposed to get +12V ignition to the relay.

The green/black goes to the + on the coil and should get +12V ignition aswell.

Does anyone recognise this or have any comment to this? I`d appreciate if someone knows I´m wrong (or right) would let me now.

First. Connect the pink/white wire from the motronic loom directly to the pink/white wire from the fuel pump. Then connect the pink and green/black wire to the grey/green wire from the ignition switch. You're done on this side.

Connect the green/black wire to the + of the coil and the white and black/white to the - of the coil. That's it, start her up!! After you check ALL grounds off course
