Can someone suggest a method of putting load on the mounts for drilling them, if I don't have a spare tranny and triangle

Good question..Id make a jig using a machine vice. 5mm or about a 1/4 " depression should do it

For what it's worth, I just drill them, not jig, pre-load or anything. It seems to work very well.

Same here. Nothing fancy or time consuming.

Once when mine broke about 15 years ago, I even did it under the car with everything mounted. Didn't replace it since.....

Has anyone investigated getting these manufactured in Poly? From my understanding, the BMW E30 M3 guys had this done for the same reason, especially the Club Racers.

poly? nah..they will be even worse. Stronger and long lived yes, but every little minor vibration you wouldn't normally feel, will be way amplified through poly. ok for heavy track use I suppose, but it would be shit on the road.

I've been thinking along similar lines to replace the worn out ones on my car.
But what I am considering using is good old leaf spring shackle rubbers.
These would still be compliant enough and allow some horizontal as well as vertical movement.

Best of all they are dirt cheap and easy to replace.

I'm in mood for upgrades lately, and since Barry's idea seemed the way to me, I decided to make a set of my own "bush type" mounts. They differ a bit, from Barry's mounts; first I have used rubber instead of polyurethane as the dampening material, additionally, there is small gap between the sleeve and the bracket of the mount, this should allow some slide when lowering the front of the tranny, for maintenance etc. Bushings I have used are Deawoo Nubira, a arm bushes, 4€ each . As you can see, they are not solid; they're partly hollow on both ends that should also help to dampen any vibrations.

Just thinking out loud here, but, being that they are A arm bushes, (and A arms only move through 1 axis, with the bush providing some small damping) aren't they designed to take load in predominantly 1 axis? ie the rotational circumference?

The tranny will be applying stress and loads in 3 planes, x,y and z axis, as it moves around under power, braking and cornering, and hence the rubber in the mount needs the gurth, thickness and freedom to "twist" to an extent. I hope Im wrong, but my suspicion is that those bushes may not be man enough for the job long term, as they may not be designed to stand the loads the tranny will apply in all three axis.

Lower control arm bushes are subjected to enormous twisting and compression loads under heavy braking so I reckon they'll handle whatever the gearbox can throw at them.

I think these are totally cool!! That exhibits the creative side to 'fix' something... I bet they'll work just fine and not to start any arguement, I see they will allow enough flex yet restrict forces in all directions.

I just did one of my "old" tricks from way back when on the rear engine tail housing mount. I filled the voids with polyeurathane. This preserves the bushing forever and it greatly reduced the vibrations being transmitted through the shifter.

What do you mean filled with polyurethane? How do you get it liquid to then harden or are you talking making up inserts to put in the bush? I have seen this as it is a common modification here for Commodores (Pontiac G8) in their diff mounts.

You can buy 2-component polyurethane in different hardnesses. It's a pourable liquid that hardens in a while.
