Front transaxle mounts

I am currently replacing the forward transaxle mounts, but when trying to order new ones, I keep coming across suppliers just selling generic ones for the 75 3.0. when I query this (since the 75/milano mounts have a thicker base plate) suppliers say they are fine for GTV6 since the the GTV6 was modified in 84 for this anyway. well mine is an 83. by fitting the Milano mounts with thicker base plate Im worried that this will put the drive shaft vertical alignemnt out of balance. ?

I replaced my 83 front mounts with good second hand genuine 75 mounts. On the genuine ones the thicker base plate is made up of 2 thicknesses of steel spot welded together. Drill the spot welds, remove one layer and you have mounts identical to the GTV6. Check with your supplier how their base plates are made.

MJR, This is a problem and you are right to be concerned about it. I have an easy solution for you here: http://www.hiperformancestore.com/guiboDSclutch.htm

Guys thanks for the advise, all suppliers and specialists I approached told me I was being picky about nothing, but I knew I wasn't.

greg I haven't fitted new ones yet, so I will take the extra base plate off. thanks again.

Digging this one up a bit. Do you guys know if the early mounts (70's) differ from the normal gtv6 mounts? Well I'm about to order new mounts I wanted to order the 75/milano mounts, which for exept of the fact to deal with the extra height they are a bolt on. Well i took my old mounts and off Milano of my friend and the difference in height is tremendous - about 1-1,5cm, so something way fatter than the welded plate present on the later mounts...
Returning to the first sentence; mounts on my gtv6 are from 1973... and milano's are form 1988. So what now?
- some morons previously installed "low" mounts from alfetta on my car
- need to look for gtv6 mount instead of 75
:?
thanks,
Pete

Just confirm dates. No GTV6 in seventies. Ours are from 1982 onwards. I have just found that mistake on my race car as I had 2.0l mounts in which are lower and smaller.(50mm X 50mm) and replaced them with genuine GTV6 ones. Last set in S.A.

Thanks kevin. I thought so, I started getting more supersticious when i was removing the transaxle which really seemed to me that it's front was way too low. Moreover that excessive rear guibo wear, it was flexed too. Now another example how a knowledgable and skilled mechanic is a MUST on these cars If you don't do the stuff yourself :?

A pic just for the record...

Ah so apples aren't apples :!:
Some good detective work there guys.

I suppose if you get desperate and cannot source the correct one, fitting a spacer under the smaller one should raise it to provide the correct alignment. However it would also be wise to fit an 8mm bolt through the mount to ensure it doesn't rip apart from the extra power of the V6.

This brings another question.
For the V6 as opposed to the 2 litre GTV, given the difference in the height (position) of the input shaft of the transaxle as a result of the different heights of the mounts, does the centre bearing mount require any spacers under it or not and likewise, what spacers (if any) are required under the rear engine mount to get all the driveline to 0* angularity?

Hmm MD, afaik the alfettas (ok or earlier 4 cyl cars) don't use the spacer plates between crosmember and the chassis so, shorter mounts compensate for the lack of spacers methinks.

That's useful info but doesn't exactly answer my question and incidentally, I am talking about a GTV6 having to use the shorter mounts due to a possible lack of parts in which case it would require packing to make it as tall as the correct part to provide original alignment.

MD has the answer, the drive shaft needs to 100% straight vertically, so fitting spacers between the mount and crossmemebr will work. the shorter mounts will put the entire transaxle way too low, and consequently may put the rear half of the drive shaft out of alignment. Didn't you notice any vibration from the fetta mounts Pierre???

As it turns out my car has some small vibration at 1200rpm and 3000rpms, and I have since discovered it already has milano mounts fitted, the entire transaxle is about 4mm too high, infact I have run the car in 3rd gear on axle stands with these old milano mounts still fitted, and I can actually see the vibration in the centre bearing probably caused by the rear half of the shaft putting a vertical load on the centre guibo and bearing. I have since got some washers to fit to bring the box down again, and see weather this height difference really is a big issue. fitting a few washers is certainly cheaper than replacing a perfectly good set of milano mounts.

Well should have put it in different words, the only solution to use small mounts on a gtv6 is to remove the crossmember spacer plates, like the one im holding here:

and yes mjr I was chasing the vibration problem since i bought the car, fooling around with the pinch bolt helped a bit, but I'm ordering proper mounts now so I hope she'll run smooth now.

And it's no BS about the proper driveline alignment those short mounts wore my rear donut waaaaaay prematurely. Needles to say that the center and front ones look like new. IT looks much worse, sorry for the quality of the pic:

pierre, I bet you still end up with Milano/75 mounts. they havent made gtv6 mounts for a long time. but no big deal, since you have them to hand, just drill off the bottom plate, and ft the mounts. the mount on the left looks like 75 mount anyway.
