Propshaft Centre Coupling

Post by SimonB »

Hello guys!
I got an advisory on my MOT for a cracked centre propshaft coupling. Its the thin one on an '84 GTV6. The cheapest I can find is £89 + VAT. Is there a cheaper source of these or am I just going to have to bite the bullet and save up? My garage is quoting 2 hours labour to change it too. Its a pig on the GTV6 apparently!

Still straight through the MOT isn't bad for a 30 year old Alfa with 192,000 miles on the clock which is still my daily driver (I'm crazy but have an amazing wife!).

Hi Simon.
If you want a new centre coupling thats not bad at all, i paid 175 dollars for it from IAP. rejoice, for yours is cheap
2 hours is pretty hopeful an estimate too, i changed mine about 5 hours back and from start to finish mine was more like 4 but im a first timer so... :wall: if youre going to take it to the shop make sure they have experience with the gtv6 because it has quirks your average toyota doesnt, or get them to read up the relevant facts and procedure here first. its a real pain in the $#%^
Best of luck!

In the end I got a BMW one for £30 which was a couple of mm thicker but otherwise identical.
My garage put it on for 2 hours labour in November and so far all has been well. There is another thread somewhere about it on here.

With all these cars it is only worth taking them to a mechanic if they are a specialist and luckily this garage is experienced with transaxle cars. £89 is more or less the same as $175 by the way, especially as the £89 was + 20% UK tax!

Anyway, I was very happy with how it all turned out. Next thing on my list is an anti-rust treatment as we have had a harsher winter here this year and I don't want to end up with a "flintstsone"!
