I think some people here have some major misconceptions about fuel injection.

All fuel injection systems I know of run what we can effectively call two modes (these are often called open or closed loop, but not always). The first mode is set up to provide a 14.7:1 AFR using data from the O2 sensor, and it's in use during normal driving. The system will determine you are driving normally by inputs from a throttle position switch, manifold pressure sensor, rpm, or some combinations of these things. With the old L-Jet system it's all off the throttle positions switch.

The second "mode" comes into play when the system decides you are trying to go fast, again via the tps, map sensor, rpm, or whatever. In this mode it will run an AFR of 12.5:1 (generally accepted to be ideal for horsepower). This mode never comes into play during an emissions check since they don't check operation under these conditions, nor is there any requirement for such a check.

I hope this is clear. You only need one map because the dual modes provide ideal emissions, economy AND power. The only exception to this is for engines that have really hot cams. In these cases it's not uncommon to have a map with retarded ignition timing to pass a smog check and a second map for actual operations. I really don't think that's the case here.

Greg is right. You only need one map. The SMOGII dyno will load your car at 1500 rpm and 2500 rpm. At those rpm vs load, 14.7:1 is definitely ok for both emission testing and drivability.

Or other way around: closed loop = lambda controlled, open loop = no lambda control.

New cars typically have closed loop control throughout the load range since the new sensors are much faster and have better temp control (i.e. wideband).

Mats I think you somehow missed the entire point. This was not a post about closed or open loop modes. (I actually didn't say which is which, parenthetical statements do not normally relate to following text in written English, just preceding text). The point is that these systems automatically switch from and emissions friendly AFR to a performance friendly AFR, hence there is no need to switch maps between various types of usage on a streetable engine.

I didn't mean to try and correct you or anything. The post was just so unclear about which is which so I wrote it down for reference, I got the point about the maps and I totally agree that you only ever need one map.

It's cool. I think we all agree, the map for max power should be the only map for this car.

Ok, you guys are right. I have one map that will pass smog and give me max power. The Alfa is ready and I am picking it up tomorrow. It's guaranteed to pass smog but I still need to stop by the dyno tuner for max power. I am not sure when I am going to do this since were ending the year.

We put in a new stock clutch for now. Andrew(JJ) still needs to send me my new clutch. The clutch that I was given was worn out and we should have inspected it before we installed it. At least we would of saved the extra labor. Live and Learn. :D

The clutch does not slip at all and were good to go. I really hope that I get my new clutch from Andrew (JJ) since I paid $800.00 again for another clutch.

We installed the drive shaft incorrectly and the rear adapter needed to be replaced. I was told that there is little to no vibration now. Can't get the Gotech to power the tach without a booster but have the diagram and part information to take care of this. The speedo does not work as well but will follow the forum's instructions to fix this.

I will email the final map to Michael after the dyno tune. Going to get to actually drive the Alfa tomorrow for the test drive but since the Alfa is not registered we will be towing the Alfa back home.

We think were there. :D :D :D Final details such as timing belt covers, double check all the electronics, add on the flanges for the exhaust system, touch up some minor blemishes in the paint, steering wheel installed, etc. We can do this at our shop now that the Alfa actually runs well.

Yeah, you know - it is really sad - the state of things...

Read up to the end - the point where it is revealed that Andrew Garcia of Garcia Alfa Racing put a USED FUCKING CLUTCH in this man's 3,000 dollar-PLUS new, built, gearbox!!!

http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/alfetta ... ax-hp.html

Good luck getting anything out of him now....! Andrew is hiding from all phone calls and emails.

Chuck, as much as you would like to hold me responsible for this, Andrew screwed BOTH of us! He still owes me almost 5,000 dollars for 6-speed gearboxes and other parts that he has not paid ME for yet!
...to Alfa, or not to Alfa? That is the question...

Out of curiosity: How can it be guaranteed to pass smog? Does your mechanic have the full setup to run the smog? Unless it has been tuned on a dyno or under load with "full" gas analyzer with sniffer in the tail pipe I don't see how it can be guaranteed.

French cars are shit and shit expensive to service and bloody awful and unreliable and expensive and friends don't let friends drive french cars and you wait years for parts.

I suggest we avoid discussing how it will pass the visual inspection. Big brother is everywhere.

CChan: Make sure to save the 'guaranteed to pass smog' program on a separate memory device before going for the 'max power' program

I am pretty sure you will have two different programs......
