for the sparkplugs on my 2.5 L

In my neverending quest to better understand the minds of Italian automotive engineers I just need to know - what purpose do the grooves in the spark plug tube serve ? I have two different types of cam covers,one has the grooves one doesn't ?

They might be for locating the part in a jig during the manufacturing process, maybe

What about simply to let the trapped air out when pushing in/on the long insulation connector.

Don't think that's it MD.The diameter of the plug insulator/resistor is quite a bit smaller than the tube plus there's a pressure relief hole in the rubber plug that fills the opening in the cam cover.

Have a look at this hole !
