OK Barry brace yourself......YOU WERE RIGHT
After removing the driveshaft I yanked that sucker out of there.
Now to be 110% sure that it's my cigarette seals that are leaking.
I've tilted the engine up on a 45 deg.with the rear down and overfilled the crank by about 3 litres and hopefully will see where the oil is coming from. With the engine running and warm there was oil leaking but cold and not running .....we'll see.
Would there be any sense in trying to pressurize my engine with air to force a leak?
Oh what we won't do to hear the sweet song of an Alfa 6 at full tilt

Murray, look at it logicly..It can only leak from the ciggy seals, rear main, front main,or the sump.Thats low down..
Then we have the headgasket, but now we are going up...If you did the seals, rear main and sump,I reckon your done here..Give the raer main a lick of the gray stuff as well.

What type of seal are you using?I prefer the red or white neoprene seals to the old black seals..

Ok we got her :D
I guess my 45 deg.tilt was more like 20 deg.(a day on you back in the cold and dirt will do that to you  ) Increased the tilt and low and behold out came the oil.The leak is right at the top of the vertical joint between the block and the bearing support.
I guess the cigarette seals aren't quite long enough to compress on their length.
Given that my crank seal is less than a year old ( it's an AR seal sort of orange in colour Barry) I want to leave it undisturbed,so I'm thinking that I'll pull the cig. seals by screwing into them and extracting them.
Next I'll inject some sealer (I'll try to find Loctite #510 but have also read that Hondabond HC is similar ?)
Sound like a reasonable approach ?
Thanks for the guidance.
