It does have a good name though, Brilliance BS.

Even if Merc came along calling their car the Brilliance it would invite skepticism...

Last I checked...

I expect to see the BS cruising around here in Mexico any minute. People here love to save a few pennies on safety. The market for the BS is right here.

Right now the most common car on the streets here is the Hyundai Atos. I would seriously bet that the Atos is far worse than the BS for safety. I have heard subjective opinions that stated the Atos is even worse than the old VW beetle in a crash. You know, the Beetle that was designed before WWII.

Now THAT is a load of BS... :P

Edit: http://www.euroncap.com/tests/hyundai_atoz_2000/25.aspx

If the Bug was to be tested the result would be five crossed out skulls and the rating would have been: Surely you are jesting, sir?
The bug, after it's bigger cousing the transporter (or "the surf bus duuuude"), must be the most dangerous car you can see on the streets nowadays. why anyone would even consider driving one of those over an Atos for safety I'll never understand.

I don't know how many of you will recall the Dacia bakkie/truck from the early 90's ? Try this for a 'safety' aspect, the radiator overflow bottle was made from glass and housed inside the passenger compartment just above the passengers legs. Cannot imagine that heap of junk even scraping one star on a NCAP test.

Nice link Mats, knowing that the Atos gets three stars, I think I might have to take one for a test drive...

The subjective opinion I refered to was based on a crash involving an Atos and a Beetle. My friend said that the Beetle got the best of it, but it was a crash involving a drunk in the beetle and a taxi driver in the Atos. Drunks seem to survive crashes much better than coherent people... Maybe that is why so many people here drive drunk. It is the best way to survive the crashes.

BTW, Airbags are considered an exotic luxury here. You can buy all sorts of fairly nice euro, japanese, and american cars with no air bags and as a result, few people have them. They need the money they saved to buy chrome colored wheels.

Just a couple of years ago there was a big fight between the cab drivers union and the state, the cabdrivers was being forced by law to wear sealtbelts, they had previously been axcluded from that law. The logic was that they felt that they rather be able to get out of the car faster then you can say Mister Mxyzptlk if they were robbed then wearing a seatbelt if they crashed. You can prabably get away with smaller thorax injuries with the airbag even if you don't wear a seatbelt when driving in town (which they do most of the time).
Maybe it was the same thing here?

Also, was the conclusion reached by looking at the cars or at the drivers/passengers?

Airbags are optional in the states? sounds weird, my last assignment was actually to design airbags for a swedish car brand and we spent a lot of time optimizing the designs for the american market. The demands are pretty different from the euro spec actually.

Im not talking about the US,
I expect to see the BS cruising around here in Mexico any minute.
I am in Mexico where the tires are bald.
The assessment of the Beetle vs Atos crash was based on the Atos cab driver (maybe no seat belt, hadnt thought of that) vs the drunk Beetle driver. Not a scientific comparison. I think both cars looked bad from it. I wasnt there.

BTW, I think your Euro Atos has an airbag. Here in mexico, I have never heard of an Atos with an airbag. They are not sold in the US, because they dont meet the safety standards. I am also told that they are illegal for highway use here, but that might be wrong. Rich kids love to rip the Atos because it is cheap. Makes them feel good about the Chryslers that they all drive. (People here think "Niiiiice caaar" when they see a late model Chrysler).

Over here they have at least three airbags, Steering wheel and curtains lh/rh. Not sure it has a passenger front but probably so that makes four.

Weird how the US laws demand so high capability Airbags if you can buy cars without them.
I wonder if there are two different article numbers for front seatbelts, they are usually very much integrated in the front impact system, i.e. the seat belts are working with the airbags and have different specs in the load limiters and pyros depending on if you have an arbag or not (might even have different ones for US/EU spec cars.)

All cars in the US come with airbags, you cannot buy them without airbags, Zambon is in Mexico now.
