is this worth it?

Post by Franknstein »

Hi guys, Im from South Africa. looking to buy a GTV6 2.5l. A dealer sent me these pics today, and the car is going for the equivalent of US$2000. Lady says she starts and runs, but pops out of reverse... Think it looks worth it? I've got more like US$4000 to spend, should I keep looking to find a later model? THis is a 82.

For real? I need to go look at it, its just real far... so had to be sure...
One thing I'd like to know though, the dash.. where does the different dash's come in.... like I've seen a couple GTV3.0's with the three gauges at the driver view and the extra three auxillary gauges... this is the older looking dash like on the Alfetta's etc.... how does that work? And also, the seats look different, they dont have the netting on the headrests and they dont look as sporty?

oh ya, and what about it popping out of reverse? Is that a major thing... common problem possibly?

looks like someone put together a few different pieces from various years to make the car..

but no matter what, looks like they did pretty decent work visually..

you will probably get a lot of newer parts like hoses.injectors..etc...seat fabric.

Take along a compression tester and a buddy who knows cars..

pop open the oil fill cap and lick the inside (if it's real sweet, you might want to think about it)

third gear pop out may be serious or may just be selector arm positioning on shaft, as long as it 'don't make no funny grinding sounds or vibrations"

Looks like a good buy, though!

Give me a call and I can show you three great gtv's including a 2.8 for R25000. They are more origional without all the colour coding. One of them has only 60 though on the clock.

Kev,maybe even Eugene's car with the full suspension kit..thats worth its price as well..
French cars are shit and shit expensive to service and bloody awful and unreliable and expensive and friends don't let friends drive french cars and you wait years for parts.

yeah, from what I can see this car looks a little abused at some stage of its life... the pink tappet covers, chip out the bumper.. etc, what surprised me though is the original condition of the exterior... even original wheels.... but I dont want to drive all the way out to Brakpan and find its a POS. My gut instinct says its a POS :D

I will contact you today Kevin.

Zamani, Benoni is pretty close to the JHB airport yes.

Thanks for all your input!

As the crow flies.Im 2.8km from the terminal building..and now they want to build additional runways that will bring the planes in right over our neighborhood..

F,Cleaner, more original (that steering wheel...eeeyuww!!..) are available..
If possible,be flexible on the money side..Id rather pay 50g`s for the right car than 16 for this car you posted..The car above is ultimatly going to cost you the 50.. :D

My gtv6 was popping out of gear as well. It ended up being a tapered reverse gear. We replaced it with a used one and all is well now. But, that kind of work could become very expensive if not done by yourself.

I don't know S.A. at all, but I'd pass on that one.

Hey Boss that thing is not so lekker for the price.

Offer them 12 Grand or so . But not More that broken bumper spells trouble. With an old alfa you can get engin parts but you will shit bricks to get the cosmetics like thart bumper .

That home job interior looks wrong that graphite finish looks cheap on GTVs

The home job circus engine looks odd ..... offer them 12 Grand or leave it out

Look for a cleaner one and look out for the following:

Check the exhaust Absolutley no oil in the pipe

Engine mounts

Let them start it and run the motor warm up then take it for a spin
Gtv valve stem oil seals are sneaky and smoke when hot
