I had the rubber blow apart with 150 kmh in a giulia, i can tell that is not something you like to happen, the hole tunnel area was one big hole, the drive shaft came within one cm off my leg and if metal is torn up that easy think what it will do with flesh, broke the gear box and of course the drive shaft.

and the little weight you save will not weight up for your own safety.
Exactly!
I've seen tunnels torn the way you describe and it will change your weight optimization mentality in a big way.

I didn't remember if Mats had said what material he was using for the part.

Designed correctly, an aluminum part may be phisically larger/thicker than a corresponding steel one, but be lighter. Then the question of available space comes up. Process, too, is important...Cast material tends to be weaker than that made from bar stock (billet), which is weaker than forged. By the look of things Mats is thinking of using bar stock. Evidently steel, but what alloy? And what is the planned outside diameter (so I can go see if i have any at work).

Good 'ol bar stock steel.

Alu will drive the size a lot since the biggest issue is getting a nut in the onto the three screws holding it to the flywheel. Also, why bother? :P
Remember the CVJ bolts go straight into this part and you don't want them relaxing or there will be problems. :?

This is only the quick & dirty version though, designed to be a fast job on a lathe, once done it can be "optimized" and milled in a CNC machine instead and probably save up to as much as 100 grams!

For all you budding machinists out there, if you were making a racing driveline, you could incorporate Mats idea into the hand made flywheel itself. No need for two parts. When you make the steel flywheel, be sure to design the centre to fit a BMW type donut or use a CV as Mats is proposing.

You would only need to do this adaptor if you intend to reuse your original flyhweel.

Comprende?

How would you fix the flywheel to the crank then? 8)

Well, they are what they are and they are too close together to fit. But you can make a much more compact 2-piece without too much work.

The thing is that the more pieces there are the greater the chance of having concentricity problems.

And that's why we use pilots.
There is no technical solution for a one-piece flywheel with a built in CV joint adapter so if you want to use the CVJ you need a two-piece.
