Ignition

Post by Phil »

Can any of you suggest a source for the coil and ballast resister for the '81 model. Am performing a systematic replacement of my ignition bits due to an unpredictable ignition. Now you have power, now you don't. All or nothing. I've discovered quite by accident that if I tap on any of the components (power mod., coil, or resister) with a rubber mallet, often, my ignition will return. Replaced the power mod., ignition switch and cleaned all connections, etc. Still, the ignition may or may not 'turn on' for lack of a better description. It's like the girl with the curl ... when it's on (or good) is very good, when it won't turn on, its horrid. Any suggestions on the problem appreciated. Any suggestions on a source for the coil/resister also greatly appreciated.

if i were you i would make sure the ignition amplifier connections are good. that is right beneath the ignition coil. the ones on my car were all oxidized and they caused what sounds like the same problem.

That won't help on 81-early 83 as ignition system different from 84 up. System very similiar to Fiat X1/9 with external ballast resistor and Aluminum coil module box. Even pick up coil in distributor is different.
